Photo Booth Fun

This was our first photo booth experience.  I know they are kind of common place in the States but they are just becoming a ‘thing’ in Australia.  My dear friend Kate hired one for her 30th Birthday.  Oh my gosh it was SO much fun!!  I have known the people in these photos since we were 18 and that’s exactly what we were acting like. Ha!
We kept jumping in the line and thinking what idea we could come up with, or what prop we could use.  It was kind of the best!

We each got to keep a copy of the photos we took.  The’ve been sitting on our fridge for the last 2 weeks and although they have been making me smile every time that I sneak a piece of chocolate, I wanted somewhere more permanent for them.
I decided to frame them together instead of individually and I kind of love how they look.

I think they were exactly what was missing from our little side table.
What a lovely reminder of what wonderful, crazy, special friends we have!
We are such dorks!

FIVE UNDER $50 – the slogan tee

I have been starting to think a bit about spring and what I need to update my wardrobe for that trans seasonal period where it is a little bit cold for just a tee but a long sleeve tee and cardigan, jacket etc is too much.
I’ve rediscovered the slogan tee.  Yeah it’s been around for a while but I have a feeling it is going to be one of the key pieces of the coming season, I’m having that feeling mostly because they are everywhere!
Trend items can be tricky.  I’m of the ‘spend money on investment pieces’ side of the bridge, so something that is just going to do me for a season or two will have a little less money thrown at it.   Above are the tees that have caught my eye recently and they are all under fifty dollars! (number 4 is $8!)  I like that they aren’t blaring with the slogan, they are like a subtle nod.  I’ll be wearing these tees with a feminine midi length circle skirt, but boyfriend it up with a denim jacket and chucks, or relaxed printed pants (probably black) and go head to toe monochrome with tee number one.

You can get the tees here.  One, Two, Three, Four, Five.
What are you thinking of trying for spring?  Would love to know so maybe I can try it too!

Roasted Vegetable Soup

This was without a doubt the best tasting soup I have ever made, or eaten!
It was SO easy.  Roast the veggies, process the veggies, eat the veggies!
It would be a crime not to share the recipe.  I used a bit more olive oil when I tossed the veggies,
and I was a fan of the pesto garnish but it would work with a dollop of sour cream too.

Roasted Vegetable Soup.
Prep time – 15 mins
Cooking time – 50 mins
Serves 4 (makes about 12 cups)

1.4kg butternut pumpkin, peeled, deseeded, cut into 3cm cubes
1/2 a cauliflower, cut into florets
2 parsnips, peeled, core removed, cut into 3cm cubes
4 carrots, peeled, thickly sliced
2 baby fennel, trimmed, sliced
1 brown onion, cut into thin wedges
1/2 bulb garlic
2 Tbsp olive oil
Sea salt and freshly ground pepper to season
6 cups vegetable stock
1 cup water
Basil pesto to serve
1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees.  Line 2 oven trays with baking paper.
Put all vegetables in a large bowl , then add oil and toss until combined.
2. Transfer vegetables to prepared trays, then season with salt and pepper.
Roast for 40 minutes or until soft.  Remove from oven and set aside to cool
    for 15 minutes.
3. Squeeze garlic cloves from skins into a small bowl.
4. Transfer half of the vegetables to the large bowl of a food processor
with 1 1/2 cups of the vegetable stock.
5. Puree until mixture is your desired consistency. Transfer to a large saucepan.
Repeat steps 4 and 5 with remaining veggies and another 1 1/2 cups of stock.
6. Add remaining stock and water to pan.  Put over a medium heat and bring to a simmer.
    Stirring occasionally.
7. Ladle soup into bowls, top each with 1 Tbsp of pesto and serve with crusty bread.
The soup went down a treat with my little family.  I hope your’s enjoy it too!

Life Lately

So if you can’t tell from the photo dump above.  July is birthday month in the Culbert household!  Angus turned 3 and husband turned…….as he put it twenty eleven.
We celebrated with balloons, donuts and a little pirate on Gus’s day and with family on Ross’s. (and a party hat Gruffalo.  a new obbsession in this house)  ‘terrible teeth in his terrible jaws’ ha!

A bit of a look at what I do at my day job. Love me a good day of merchandising!

That’s my bestie up there.  Doing what she does best.  Being fabulous!

We celebrated our bestie’s housewarming yesterday.  They are officially homeowners!
Woohoo!  So proud of them.  That’s the four of us.  In 2008.  Looking all young and stuff.

And, I got to enjoy the rareness which is the bug falling asleep on me.  Love, love love!
Little snores.  (insert heart bursting)

Time For A Change

If you have happened to visit my little space before, you might have noticed that we have had ourselves a name change over here.  Lil and Hubby is no longer.  I mean Lil and Hubby are still very much together but the name didn’t really suit where I wanted this blog to go, or what I had to share on it.  I will still be sharing pictures of both Husband and Gus but I want to share ‘The Splendid Things’ too.  Things that make my heart sing, whether it be fashion, advice, amazing interiors…..whatever is SPLENDID.

It took me a while to decide on the name ‘splendid’, I mean when you first think of something being ‘splendid’ you immediately think of the finer things in life……lush interiors, an amazing handbag, the perfect LBD.  But, after a while I realised that ‘splendid’ to me means anything that makes your world a better place.  It could be fresh flowers on the table, or a silly pic you find that your cheeky toddler took on your phone.
I hope you enjoy what I have to share.

H&M has done it again!
Black, white and copper is where it’s at.
These pieces would be the perfect finishing touches for our little home makeover.
And for under $120 they could all be mine…….
If only H&M was online in Oz, or if the line wasn’t so long in Melbourne.
Bring on our trip to New York.
Do you think one suitcase will be enough?

A Bright little Bedside Makeover

The humble bedside table is something that I have always taken for granted.  It’s always there like a reliable friend, holding your books, and empty coffee cups and the latest toddler toy obsession.  I only really thought about my table yesterday when I stumbled across a blue lacquered tray from Kmart for the CRAZY price of $8.  I couldn’t wait to come home and give my forgotten friend a little makeover.

So here are the before and after pics.  I’m really happy with the result.  Cheap and Cheerful just the way I like it!

(I managed to clean the vegemite marks and dust off first) The trusty table is from IKEA
purchased after what seemed like the longest amount of time you can ever look for a bedside table!  The lamp is from Freedom.  They were impulse purchase after we decided you couldn’t get funky lamps anywhere else for $29!

So I added the tray and……….

Voila!  Instant bright happy bedside table!

It’s not cluttered, it doesn’t have crumbs all over it.  I’m in love!

The wooden box is something I inherited (stole) from my mum a long time ago,  the tray holds the two pieces of jewellery (other than my wedding rings) that I wear most often, my Michael Kors watch and my Oroton Bracelet.
For the record I am trying to read 3 books at the moment.
Bonkers by the hilarious Jennifer Saunders,  The Vouge Factor by Kristy Clements and a cute craft book that I probably won’t make anything from. You know wonder woman multitasking!

My dream of having a colourful, bright bedroom is slowly coming true!  Just ask the pillows.

Now to just tackle the husband’s side of the bed!

Yep, it was a week ago……….Our Easter Sunday

Oh, these four!!! They just make the world go round and Easter a lot more fun!

The chocolate highs, the squeals of excitement, the running, the jumping laughing and more squealing!

Our easter sunday was low key and fantastic.  Spending it with our fabulous family.
We are so lucky that our Bug gets to grow up with his cousins.  I hope that they still hug each other hello and good bye when they are teenagers and way to cool to be doing that sort of thing.

Hope your easter break was all kinds of awesome and you are enjoying the Anzac break too.   Lest We Forget.

Pillow Case, Candle, Cushion Cover, Box, Basket, Towel

So…..unless you have been living under a rock you would know that fashion powerhouse H&M is opening in the old GPO building in Melbourne on the 5th of April.
That is only 13 days away!  Less than two weeks!  To say I am excited is an understatement

Good quality fashion and home wares for the whole family at unbelievably great prices!!

My husband and I are already planning a trip to our favourite city pretty much so we can go to H&M.  I have a wish list as long as the line will be to get in, but above are my six favourites from their current home ware’s collection.  I obviously have quite a thing with yellow, pink and black.  These guys would be the perfect finishing touches to our nearly finished lounge/dining room. And you can get all of the above for 76 bucks! It is like stealing really!

Have you made a H&M wish list yet?

I Kinda Have a thing for Pineapples

The love affair started innocently enough……I spotted this little wooden pineapple at my local Vinnies for $3.00.  It was cute and kitch.  I liked it instantly!

A few weeks ago, Ross and I were at Freedom getting Ideas for our little home reno when I spotted the little ceramic summer pineapple for $19.  A friend for my little wooden one? Ross rolled his eyes and shook his head, he knew what was coming.

I have since found a third, large olive green ceramic pineapple from Haven and Space in Berry.  So my trio is now complete.  But my obsession is not.

pineapple love

The pineapple is everywhere this summer, and I can’t get enough of the spiky fruit!

Have you ever become slightly attached to a certain object, or trend?
